Bastille Reminds Us It's Okay To Just Be 'Survivin'' On New Single

Bastille has treated fans to another new single and it's as relatable as they come.

Earlier this week, the band dropped “Survivin'” and the new track basically sums up how most of us are feeling in the “new normal.” The new track gives us the green light to know sometimes, it's okay to just survive the day — something we can all remind ourselves of more often.

While it's basically 2020's anthem, as it turns out, Bastille wrote the song last year and the band almost didn't release it once the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe.

“I felt weird about releasing something that might sound like it was so directly about this year [stet] weirdness. But I’ve gotten over that and now here it is,” singer Dan Smith wrote on Instagram. “It was a lot of fun to make, and I love how spacious and different it feels. I also love that it’s littered with the voices and musicianship of loads of our mates, and hopefully it’s a weird cathartic bit of escapism for some of you.”

“Survivin'” follows “What You Gonna Do???,” the band’s recent collab with Blur's Graham Coxon. As with most of Bastille's discography, this song touches on how overwhelming today's world is as well as the anxieties one can feel.

In the chorus Smith sings: “What can I say? I'm survivin' / Crawlin' out these sheets to see another day / What can I say? I'm survivin' / And I'm gonna be fine, I'm gonna be fine / I think I'll be fine.”

If you've noticed a trend in Bastille's releases you'd be correct. While the band is used to dropping albums, they're now experimenting with only releasing singles.

Smith recently told ABC: “The environment in which people release music now is much more fluid and there aren't really as many rules, and that's great... It just seemed important and exciting to us to be able to throw something out and let it stand on its own two feet.”
